Sodium chlorate’s main use is the generation of chlorine dioxide for pulp bleaching. Pulp is a key ingredient in the production of paper and cardboard. Sodium chlorate is a crystalline white powder which is made by the electrolysis of a hot sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt) solution. It was formerly used as an herbicide but this use was banned in Europe in 2008.
